Barbara Elisabeth van Houten

Barbara Elisabeth van Houten (April 8, 1863 – May 27, 1950) was a Dutch painter.
Houten was born in Groningen and studied at the École du Louvre in Paris before finishing her studies under August Allebé at the Rijksacademie voor Beeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam.〔(Barbara Elisabeth van Houten ) in the RKD〕 She was the niece of Sientje Mesdag-van Houten who gave her advice on her studies.〔
Besides oil paintings she is also known for etchings and was a member of the short-lived ''Dutch Etcher's Club'' (1885-1896).〔
Two of her etchings ''Two seated girls'' and ''Tulips'' were included at the 1893 Chicago World's Fair.〔(Barbara Elisabeth van Houten (1862 - 1950) ) as an "Etcher" at the 1893 Chicago World's Fair
Her painting ''Girl in a Chair'' was included in the 1905 book ''Women Painters of the World''.〔''(Women painters of the world, from the time of Caterina Vigri, 1413-1463, to Rosa Bonheur and the present day )'', by Walter Shaw Sparrow, The Art and Life Library, Hodder & Stoughton, 27 Paternoster Row, London, 1905〕
Houten died in The Hague.
